Marquis and Marchioness Titles

In the UK, a marquis (or marquess), is a title of nobility that ranks between a duke and an earl. The fact that these titles are less well known seems to add an air of mystery and prestige.

In the past, a marquis was responsible for frontier territories called a march. He had responsibility for defending and fortifying this land against hostile neighbours and so had a more elevated position than counts (whose territories were not located on a country's border).

What is the origin of Marquis and Marchioness Titles?

Marquis (or marquess): Originating from the Old French marchis – this title originally described a nobleman responsible for a defending a frontier territory called a "march".

Marchioness: A title given to the wife or widow of a marquis.
